Waiting Upon God: The Power of Patience

In the quiet moments of waiting, it’s easy to wonder if God hears our prayers or knows the ache in our hearts. We may find ourselves in seasons where it feels like nothing is moving forward—dreams are stalled, doors seem closed, and hope can feel dim. But God’s perspective on waiting is not one of emptiness or delay. In His wisdom, waiting becomes a time of preparation, building something beautiful in us that we may not yet see.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8 vs 18

This verse reminds us that no matter how difficult our current trials may seem, they are temporary compared to the eternal glory God has prepared for us. Our struggles, though painful, are shaping us into something far greater than we can imagine. God promises that the challenges we endure will lead to a glorious future, one filled with His presence, peace, and purpose. We can take heart, knowing that our journey, though hard at times, is leading to something beautiful beyond comparison.

Take a moment to consider Joseph, a man given dreams of greatness at a young age. He was excited, perhaps even impatient, to see these dreams fulfilled. But instead of walking right into them, he was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and later imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Joseph must have wondered if God had forgotten him in that prison. But God was shaping Joseph’s heart, teaching him patience, resilience, and trust. Years later, he rose to a position of power, using the very patience God had instilled in him to save an entire nation during a famine. Joseph’s waiting wasn’t wasted; it was essential for his destiny.

Then, look at David, anointed as king while still a young shepherd. Surely he thought he would step into the throne soon after. Instead, he spent years fleeing from King Saul, hiding in caves, and running for his life. Through those years, David grew close to God, pouring out his heart in psalms of hope and worship. It was in his waiting that he became known as “a man after God’s own heart.” His journey teaches us that waiting isn’t about inaction; it’s about deepening our connection with God, growing in faith, and trusting in His timing.

Today, we see similar stories around us. Think of Nelson Mandela, imprisoned for 27 years. Despite the injustice, he held to his vision of freedom and unity, becoming a leader who brought about profound change. Imagine if he had given up or lost hope. His patience, just like Joseph and David, brought transformation—not just to him but to countless others. In every case, God worked through the waiting to prepare, strengthen, and uplift.

When we wait on God, we can feel the tension between our current challenges and His promises. But Isaiah reminds us of the strength that comes through waiting: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). God doesn’t leave us to fend for ourselves during these times. Instead, He gives us His strength, enabling us to rise above the trials, like eagles soaring high.

While we wait, we often gain an unexpected gift—joy. Yes, joy, even in the waiting! Picture a farmer planting seeds and then watching them grow. He doesn’t see the harvest immediately, but he knows that it will come. In the same way, God gives us small moments of joy along the way, reassuring us that He’s at work. Sometimes it’s a kind word from a friend, a glimpse of progress, or even a beautiful sunrise that whispers, “I am here. Trust Me.”

So, let’s pause and laugh a little, knowing that God has already seen our story from beginning to end. Isn’t it refreshing to know that the Creator of the universe is on our side, cheering us on and reminding us not to rush the process? We can rest in His promises, knowing He is faithful.

Reflection: Where in your life do you feel the weight of waiting? Ask God to fill you with His peace, reminding you that this season is a stepping stone, not a stumbling block.

Encouragement: Waiting upon God isn’t about delay; it’s about development. Trust that He is at work in the silence, preparing you for a future that reflects His goodness. Hold onto hope, knowing that after the storm, you will rise. Let this season be a time of drawing close to God, holding on to His promises, and rejoicing in the small signs of growth along the way. The waiting is just the beginning—you will be glorified with Him, victorious, after this season. You will rise again, stronger, and closer to the heart of God.
